An indicative calculation under Act No. 461/2003 Coll. as in force on 16 October 2026, with the rules verified as at 16 October 2026. The Social Insurance Agency decides on the benefit. The calculator does not cover foreign insurance, transfer of a pregnant employee to other work, adoption, death, interruption of care or special service systems. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.
This means a self-employed person who is compulsorily insured for sickness insurance according to the Social Insurance Agency statement. Having a trade licence alone is not enough. Compulsory sickness insurance arises only when income exceeds the statutory threshold. The minimum monthly assessment base for the self-employed was 715,00 € in 2025 and is 914,40 € in 2026. From 1 July 2026, a special regime applies to some self-employed people (the micro-contribution, Act No. 122/2026 Coll.).
Voluntary pension insurance alone is not enough for maternity benefit. You need voluntary sickness insurance, which begins at the earliest when you submit an application.
The assessment base includes the gross wage on which contributions were paid, not the net wage.
If you do not know, leave it empty. We assume you had none.
Unpaid leave and similar days in the current insurance before the start date. For the 90-day rule.
The wage agreed for the month of the start date (confirmed by the employer), or, for voluntary insurance, the chosen assessment base. One thirtieth of it gives the probable daily base. In the ordinary calculation it is capped from above (25,4000 € in 2026, 27,0000 € in 2027). It is not a minimum maternity benefit.
In these cases the calculator would rather not give an amount, or marks it as an estimate. The Social Insurance Agency decides on the basis of its records.
Maternity benefit is a sickness insurance benefit. What matters is the insurance, not whether you work or run a business. Entitlement is checked first, and only then is the amount calculated.
Sickness insurance in the two calendar years before the day of birth is counted; for the father and another insured person, in the two years before the day from which they claim the benefit. Two years are counted by the calendar, not as 730 days. A window that includes 29 February has 731 days.
The insurance of an employee, a self-employed person and a voluntarily insured person all count, including insurance that has ended. For the mother, successfully completed secondary or university study that gave her the relevant level of education can also count. A document is needed. Unpaid leave does not count.
Days in the protection period are not counted; the period is not insurance.
When the insurance ends, entitlement to maternity benefit remains for a time. Normally this is 7 days after the insurance ends. If the insurance lasted less than 7 days, the period is as long as the insurance lasted.
The mother is entitled to 8 months, but only if the insurance ended within the 42 weeks before the expected date of birth, as first determined by the doctor. If it ended earlier, the ordinary 7 days apply.
When new sickness insurance begins within the period, the period following the old insurance ends. Unemployment alone does not rule out entitlement.
Maternity benefit is 75 % of the daily assessment base (DVZ). The DVZ is the total of the assessment bases from the assessment period, divided by the number of its calendar days excluding the days the law excludes, for example sick leave (PN) or family-care leave (OČR). It is rounded up to four decimal places. The assessment period depends on the type of insurance and when the entitlement arose.
| Situation | Assessment period |
|---|---|
| The insurance has lasted since 1 January of the previous year | The whole previous calendar year |
| The insurance began later and there are at least 90 days with contributions paid before the start date | From the start of insurance to the end of the month before the month of the start date |
| Fewer than 90 days, but in the previous year had at least 90 days with another employer | The base from that year. Income from the current employer is not added. |
| Not even then | Probable daily base (PDVZ) |
Ninety days are calendar days of insurance before the start date, not working days. With a start date of 30 November and insurance from 1 September, that is exactly 90 days and the assessment period is September to October. With a start date of 29 November, it is 89 days.
| The insurance began | Assessment period |
|---|---|
| On 1 January of the previous year at the latest | The previous calendar year |
| During the previous year | From the start to 31 December |
| Earlier this year, before the month of the start date | From the start to the end of the month before the start date |
| In the month of the start date, before the start date | From the start to the day before the start date |
| Exactly on the start date | PDVZ (check the exception when an interruption ends) |
The assessment base from the Social Insurance Agency statement is used, not turnover or the tax base. The increase in the minimum base to 914,40 € in 2026 does not show up in the benefit if the assessment period is 2025 (715,00 €). The employee 90-day rule is not used for the self-employed.
A voluntarily insured person must have had continuous sickness insurance for at least 26 weeks (182 days) before the start date. The assessment period is then determined as for the self-employed. Otherwise the PDVZ from the chosen base is used. The abolition of the exclusion from paying contributions from 2026 applies only to employees. Voluntarily insured people have kept the exclusion from paying contributions during social events.
The probable daily base is one thirtieth of the monthly base on which contributions would be paid in the month the benefit starts. It is not divided by the number of days in the month. In the ordinary calculation, it has a cap of 25,4000 € for 2026 and 27,0000 € for 2027.
It is an upper limit, not a minimum maternity benefit. Some sources call it the “minimum PDVZ”, which is incorrect. If the actual daily base is lower, it stays lower and is not raised to this value.
The exception is protection under Section 57(4): if you had no base in the assessment period only because of maternity benefit or parental leave, the probable base without this cap is used, or possibly a higher daily base from the previous maternity benefit under the same insurance. The Social Insurance Agency confirms it.
The wage in 2026 has no effect on this calculation; the assessment period is 2025.
Each month is calculated separately and rounded up to 10 cents. The total is the sum of the months, not a single calculation for the whole period. With a DVZ of 33,3334 €, a full 30-day month comes to 750,10 € and a 31-day month to 775,10 €, 1 525,20 € in total. A single rounding for 61 days would give only 1 525,10 €. The first and last months are calculated by actual days; for example, a start on 15 October is 17 days.
What decides is the year in which the right to the benefit arose, not the year of payment or today’s date. Where there are several insurance periods at the same time, one combined cap applies to the total of the bases. One benefit is paid.
| Parameter | Entitlement arose in 2026 | Entitlement arose in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum DVZ or total of the bases | 100,2083 € | 106,5206 € |
| Maximum daily maternity benefit | 75,156225 € | 79,890450 € |
| Full 28-day month | 2 104,40 € | 2 237,00 € |
| Full 30-day month | 2 254,70 € | 2 396,80 € |
| Full 31-day month | 2 329,90 € | 2 476,70 € |
| Cap on the ordinary PDVZ (not a minimum) | 25,4000 € | 27,0000 € |
The Social Insurance Agency has published the maximum amounts and the PDVZ cap, and the 28-day months are worked out by the same method. The maximum does not mean 75 % of the current wage. The wage needed to reach it depends on the assessment period, the number of days, bonuses and excluded days.
A cap set when the benefit is awarded does not rise in January. An entitlement that arose in December 2026 on a maximum of 100,2083 € pays 2 329,90 € in January 2027 for 31 days, not 2 476,70 €. An entitlement from 2027 pays 2 316,90 € in February 2028 (29 days) on the 2027 maximum. A new entitlement is always assessed according to the year in which it arose.
| Situation | Duration |
|---|---|
| Mother | 34 weeks |
| Single mother | 37 weeks |
| Mother after the simultaneous birth of several children, caring for at least two | 43 weeks |
| Father or other insured person | 28 weeks |
| Single other insured person | 31 weeks |
| Another insured person caring for two or more children | 37 weeks |
A week has 7 days. The last paid day is the start plus the length in days minus one. For the father, the days of paternity benefit actually paid are deducted: after 14 days, 182 days remain, and after seven days, 189 days.
The mother can start 8 weeks at the earliest and 6 weeks at the latest before the due date. If she started later, it does not affect when entitlement arises: entitlement arises by law, and a later start does not move it. The benefit then lasts until the end of the 28th week from the birth, and at most until the end of the 34th week from the day entitlement arose.
Tip: choosing a start date around the end of the year. With a due date of 12 February 2027, eight weeks before is 18 December 2026 and six weeks is 1 January 2027. If you start in December, the assessment period is 2025 and the 2026 parameters apply; if you start in January, it is 2026 and the 2027 parameters. With a wage of 1 500 € in 2025 and 2 000 € in 2026, that is 1 109,60 € against 1 479,50 € for 30 days. An entitlement from 2026 does not increase by itself in 2027, so it is worth comparing the dates. An earlier birth or a change in the due date may change the assumptions.
Paternity benefit lasts a maximum of 14 days and is taken in the first six weeks after the birth. It can overlap with the mother’s maternity benefit.
Each of these mistakes looks harmless, but it changes the amount by tens or hundreds of euros a month.
A high wage agreed for a few weeks does not guarantee the maximum. Without 90 days of insurance and without a substitute base from last year, the PDVZ with a cap of 25,4000 € is used. In 2026 that is at most 571,50 € for 30 days, and in 2027 607,50 €.
Days of sick leave (PN) and family-care leave (OČR) are subtracted from the denominator. A month of sick leave without pay in 2025 gives a denominator of 334 days instead of 365, and maternity benefit of 1 111,60 € for 30 days. Dividing by all the days, or by eleven months, is a mistake.
The previous year decides. A self-employed person who paid on the minimum of 715 € in 2025 gets 529,00 € for 30 days. A higher base from 2026 onwards does not show up in this benefit.
Protection under Section 57(4) applies only under certain conditions, and the daily bases are compared, not the monthly amounts paid. A 30-day and a 31-day month would distort the comparison. Returning to work or earning income between benefits may change the calculation branch, so it is calculated from your specific assessment period.
For an employee and a self-employed person with daily bases of 50 € and 60 €, two maximums do not apply. The bases are added up to 110 €, limited to 100,2083 €, and one benefit of 2 254,70 € for 30 days is paid.
The daily benefit is not rounded; the monthly amount is rounded up to 10 cents, and the total is the sum of the months. A single rounding at the end may come out 10 cents lower.
Maternity benefit is a social insurance benefit and is exempt from income tax. It is not a gross wage from which tax and employee contributions would normally be deducted when it is paid.
Maternity benefit is counted towards a spouse’s own income when assessing the non-taxable part of the tax base for a spouse. Being exempt from tax therefore does not mean zero income for all tax purposes. Parental allowance is treated differently under this rule.
The payroll calculator works out net pay and contributions from employment, and you can fill in your income tax return in the online tax return.
Business turnover is not a substitute base for the benefit. Business income does not automatically rule out maternity benefit, and there is no general obligation to suspend a trade licence. You must, however, keep up genuine care of the child.
Payment of contributions and any interruption of insurance are assessed separately. Exclusion from paying contributions during maternity benefit is not an automatic end to a trade licence. Health insurance, the tax return and VAT are separate matters and are not calculated from the amount of maternity benefit.
Maternity benefit is 75 % of the daily assessment base. An employee who earned 1 500 € throughout 2025 and starts in 2026 receives 1 109,60 € for a 30-day month. For an entitlement from 2026, the most it can be is 2 254,70 € for 30 days and 2 329,90 € for 31 days.
First, entitlement is checked: insurance or a protection period, and 270 days of insurance. Then the assessment period is determined, and from it the daily assessment base (the total of the bases divided by the number of days). That is limited by the cap and multiplied by 0,75. The monthly amount is rounded up to 10 cents.
For an entitlement that arose in 2027, the maximum is 2 396,80 € for a 30-day month, 2 476,70 € for 31 days and 2 237,00 € for 28 days. It is based on a maximum daily base of 106,5206 €. An entitlement that arose in 2026 is not increased in 2027.
At the earliest 8 weeks and at the latest 6 weeks before the due date. If the child is born earlier, entitlement arises on the day of birth. Starting later does not move the day entitlement arises, and the payment period may be shortened.
Yes, if she is compulsorily insured for sickness insurance, has at least 270 days of insurance and the sickness insurance contributions have been paid (arrears of less than 5 €). Having a trade licence alone is not enough. The benefit is calculated from the assessment bases in the assessment period, not from turnover. With the minimum of 715 € in 2025, it comes to 529,00 € for 30 days.
You can, if your protection period is still running and you have 270 days of insurance. The period is 7 days after the insurance ends, or 8 months if the insurance ended within the 42 weeks before the expected birth. If new insurance begins during the period, it ends. The assessment period is set as at the day the insurance ended.
It is calculated afresh from your own assessment period, not automatically from the previous maternity benefit. If you had no assessment base in it only because of maternity benefit or parental leave, protection under Section 57(4) may apply, which the Social Insurance Agency confirms. The same or a higher benefit is not guaranteed.
Yes, usually after the six weeks following the birth, provided the mother is not receiving maternity benefit for the same child or parental allowance at that time and the father is caring for the child. The period is 28 weeks minus the days of paternity benefit already paid. Paternity benefit lasts 14 days and is taken in the first six weeks after the birth.
No, maternity benefit is exempt from income tax. However, it is counted towards the spouse’s own income when claiming the non-taxable part of the tax base for a spouse.
Not for maternity benefit that has already been awarded. An entitlement that arose in 2026 continues in 2027 with the original base and the original maximum. A new entitlement from 2027 is assessed separately with the new parameters: maximum 106,5206 €, PDVZ cap 27,0000 €.
