Accounting made understandable

Once a month, a new article appears here about something a company or its accountant actually deals with in practice. Without quoting legal sections that no one reads anyway – and without advice that only works on paper.

Minimum wage in Slovakia 2027 – take-home pay and what changes

From January 2027, Slovakia’s minimum wage is €972 gross per month. For an employee claiming the non-taxable part, with no children and no other deductions, our example gives €772.11 net. The employer’s payroll cost is €1,323.85 before meals and other costs. Here is what these figures include and which allowances should not be confused.

Booking and Airbnb in 2026: tax, VAT and landlords’ obligations in Slovakia

An empty flat, a few bookings and the first payment in the bank. But tax questions begin well before the annual return: using a property repeatedly to earn income can make its owner a taxable person for VAT purposes, even without a trade licence. A commission charged from abroad can trigger obligations before the turnover threshold for full VAT registration is reached. The article describes the Slovak rules for property in Slovakia.

Doing business in 2027: what is changing in taxes, contributions and wages

2027 does not bring one big change but several smaller ones which, for a business owner, add up to higher payroll costs, higher minimum contributions and new VAT rules. The most visible is the minimum wage of €972, but minimum wage entitlements, weekend and night-work premiums, income tax thresholds and contributions for the self-employed are also changing.

How shares, ETFs and crypto-assets are taxed in 2026

Anyone who invests faces four questions every year: what is actually taxed, at what rate, whether health insurance contributions are added to the tax, and whether a tax return has to be filed. The answer is different for shares than for crypto-assets, and different for dividends than for a sale. We have gone through the Income Tax Act, the Health Insurance Act, the double taxation treaties and the answers of the Financial Administration, and for every statement we leave the wording it is based on. At the end there are tips on how to reduce your tax legally.

Everything an individual can claim in the 2026 tax return

Both an employee and a self-employed person can reduce their tax in several ways: the non-taxable part for yourself and for your spouse, contributions to the third pillar, the child tax bonus and the bonus on mortgage interest. A self-employed person also chooses between flat-rate and actual expenses, and deducts the social and health insurance contributions paid. 2026 brought new formulas and new tax rates. We went through the law and the tax authority’s methodological guidelines, and for every statement we give the wording it is based on.

Company car and VAT: 50 % is the new rule, 100 % has to be proven

From 1 January 2026, a VAT payer can deduct only half of the VAT on a passenger car that is also used privately. The full VAT goes only to those who use the car exclusively for business, notify the tax office of this and keep an electronic mileage log. Let's look at exactly what the law requires, how the Financial Administration checks it and what to do if you have deducted 100 % and the car also drives home.

What we write about here

Not about legislative news – you can read that in ten other places. We write about things our clients ask us and that cannot be answered in a single sentence.

How things are done in practice

What a specific document means, why the accountant asks for exactly this, and what happens if they do not get it in time. In other words, what you will not find in the law.

Where unnecessary costs come from

Most fines and back payments do not come from bad intent, but from a missed deadline or a missing document. We write about what can be avoided.

Do you have a question you would like an article about? Write to us – we take most of our topics from what clients ask us.

Would you rather just ask directly?

Write to us about your situation. We will reply specifically and without obligation – even if it ultimately does not lead to us working together.
